Every test should begin with a initialization, e.g a plug-in and let the device be in "disco mode" until blue steady light.
When exhaling into the mouthpiece, the exhale should be at least 15 seconds.
Do not make a deep inhalation before the exhale. A good test is when you exhale until there is no more air possible to exhale.
Let the Ketonix be plugged in a minute or so after measuring, looking at a light for a minute will make you calm and "heat off" some of the moisture in the sensor!
GOT A PROBLEM WITH YOUR UNIT?
Our process is like this: First we communicate via mail to if possible solve your problem. If that is not successful we will ask you to send the unit back to us for inspection and repair. You should print out the mail conversation and include that with the unit, otherwise it will take a longer time for your unit to be returned. If you are covered by the One Year Limited Warranty we refund you your postage to us of course. When we repaired or replaced the unit we send it back to you. Usually the unit is going back to you the same or next day.
SEVERAL COLOR INDICATIONS?
If your device makes a series of colors when or just after you test, it is normal. After it becomes steady blue it starts to measure. When it determines a level, it will indicate it. The sensor gets better with use so it is not an issue that it first displays green then yellow as the concentration rise. When you use it without software (Ketonix 2015) it will hold the highest value until you unplug it. If you use the software you will see and understand the process. Using the software, first select your profile then click on "Start" when you want to measure. That will also hold the highest reading until you click on "Stop & Save".
To get consistent readings it is very important to follow the same procedure each time.
You want the contents of your lungs to be exposed to the Ketonix, not air just halfway down your lungs. When exhaling into the mouthpiece, the exhale should be at least 15 seconds, and it should be the last air in your lungs. Do not make a deep inhale before the exhale. A good test is when your exhale 15 seconds or more and there is no more air possible to exhale. Both humidity and temperature can affect the readings. Taking a bunch of measures after one another might cause the readings to jump up a level if the concentration is on the borderline between two ranges. If making a multiple test, let it cool down unplugged between the tests.
The first time you use your Ketonix the sensor may need more time to initialize than the following measures. This behaviour might occur if you don't use it for some time. Just let it be plugged in for some hours and the startup time will be faster.

COMPARING AGAINST BETA-HYDROXYBUTYRATE IN BLOOD
Ketonix measures the acetone in breath. It is not the same as the beta-hydroxybutyrate in blood. Almost all users of Ketonix are in some way comparing these values and find how they relate. There are not a simple relationship that can be applied for the values, except in certain controlled conditions. There is definitely a big difference between how these values relate in a person not ketoadapted and one that is.
The relationship between acetone concentration and beta-hydroxybutyrate concentration is not always following each other.
Beta-hydroxybutyrate stays in blood if it is not used as energy. Acetone (which Ketonix indicates) is processed in the liver and expelled in the breath, e.g the concentration decreases over time. The beta-hydroxybutyrate level can be rapidly decreased by ingesting sugar, the acetone level will not react as quick. Example, eating a high protein meal can produce a result of low beta-hydroxybutyrate while still having acetone. If body has enough energy reserve (high beta-hydroxybutyrate) and is in rest (no energy or food ingestion) it has no need to produce more ketones and the ketogenesis process is low. In this situation the acetone concentration can be low and the beta-hydroxybutyrate be high. When beta-hydroxybutyrate is used as energy it does that via the hydroxybutyrate-hydrogenase (turns into acetoacetate) and acetone is released. In this situation the beta-hydroxybutyrate concentration decrease and the acetone increase. One of the situations where there is a relationship between the both ketones is for example when doing a fasting protocol without exercise. This protocol seems to be used in most studies as it is "simple" to do, unfortunately it is not how most of us live.
A way to have high beta-hydroxybutyrate levels in your blood is to not get out of ketosis. This can be achieved by using the Ketonix device and monitor your ketone production. A way to manage your ketone levels could be: during the week, use Ketonix to adjust exercise and food composition to keep yourself in ketosis. And measure your beta-hydroxybutyrate at the weekend. Ketonix indicates your ketosis, beta-hydroxybutyrate tests says how much ketone reserve you have and that depends on your energy consumption and insulin. It is simply easier to know that you are in ketosis than looking at the reserve. Keep the production of ketones up and you will build up your reserve to!

To help our users to understand the workings of breath ketones we will soon launch a study where users can submit their measures. This data will be analyzed by a statistician and we could all benefit from these results.
When you received your Ketonix, you are likely to test it all the time. When doing so, a normal reaction from others is to have a go at it to see if they just happen to burn a lot of fat (even if they don't use a low carb hi fat diet).
Eating carbohydrate rich food and looking for ketones does not make sense. The body does not produce that much ketones while there is available carbohydrates, unless you have diabetes type 1 and have very high blood sugar values.
The reading may be high on high carber's, but that is not from ketones. It will be from the process of breaking down those carbohydrates. This process is done via bacteria in your gut. To much of this bacteria could cause a slowdown of your metabolism. There are studies that connects the bacteria to obesity and other issues.
So, use it in context. Example: If you eat pizza and beer then look for ketones ... you are out of context.
When exercising your body needs more energy. Ketones is energy and will be used and during a short medium training session, your levels of ketones goes down. During a longer session, the buffer of ketones may become emptied and the process of breaking down fatty acids begun to produce more ketones. As a result of a longer session the ketones can be higher than before. Another factor is if you are keto-adapted or not. This is the real fun of monitoring your ketones, how your body works. Your body is unique and Ketonix will help you understand it better.
FORUM "STUNTS" n = 1
There are always n = 1 articles in the forums that tries to catch attention, much like the newspapers ... entertaining! However it is sad that there are unserious articles about a subject which is complex and can help so many people. Measuring ketones in subjects that are not low carb is not making sense, unless trying to predict how much methane there will released into the room around them. Our recommendation is to "have a pinch of salt" to the articles and regard them as entertainment and a try to get attention.
There are many parameters that has to be considered.
Eating High Carb?
Looking for ketones and not eating low carb? The fear of ketoacidosis is probably a reason to do this. People with diabetes type 1 needs to keep their ketones low when the blood sugar is high. They need to keep the blood sugars in a normal range which non diabetics have. Eating a low carb diet would probably have great effects for all diabetics. Many of Ketonix users have diabetes and minimizing the use of insulin by keeping the blood glucose constant by eating a low carb diet.
Eating a non low carb diet will not produce a reading of ketones. If any it says more about how your gut flora is trying to break down the carbohydrates. For some there could be an excess of M Smithii bacteria, see the link below.
So Ketonix is like a switchblade, indicating gut bacteria problems for non low carb dieters, and a ketone indicator for low carb dieters.
A device for people having diabetes (and not eating low carb?!) is currently in development and testing.
If the person is fat-adapted or not, greatly affects the levels of ketones. When starting to follow a low-carb lifestyle the ketone levels will be high due to the glucose demand from the muscles and brain. After some weeks the ketone level will drop quite a lot when the muscles gets adapted to use fat as fuel. Fat is stored in the muscles and muscles can easily use it. If you eat similar food during the whole first phase you will notice when you get "fat adapted". In this first phase ketones are in high demand until adapted. Eating a low carb (<100 grams), moderate amount of protein (about 1 gram protein per bodyweight in kg) and the rest of the energy from fat will get you into ketosis and the readings will be ketones, not the breakdown from carbs.
