Study and Coach using Ketonix

 

The Study and Coach function is free for all healthcare professionals that want a easy way to follow their clients progress using a ketogenic diet.

A doctor, nutritionist could with one click create their own "study". The "study" is a group of clients that one wants to access their logged breath acetone and other data points like nutrients and exercise.

 

It works like this:

First the doctor/dietitian/nutritionist/coach selects Create Study, then choose a name which identifies the group of clients who is targeted.

The result is a pair of keys, one is the Study Id the other is a Study Key. There is also a third key generated, the Resign Key. The Resign Key is only available to the clients on request to stop participating in the study.

The two first keys, Study Id and Study Key is distributed to the clients that would participating in the study. By entering the keys in the enrolment form, the clients are enrolled to the study.

Now the doctor/dietitian/nutritionist/coach can in one click download the data files for the enrolled clients. To view and analyse the data is as simple as dropping them on the KetonixViewer app. More advanced users might use their own spreadsheet functionality for analyse.

I was a vegetarian until the age of 25 and my diet consisted of mostly carbs such as bread and pasta, but also a lot of junk food and candy bars. As a university student I often spent my late hours together with my books and a big cup of coffee, and gradually replaced real food with sugar to keep me awake during the days. As expected, I felt rather tired, unmotivated and weak. I also suffered from frequent colds. 
 
After a lecture in environmental chemistry I caught the eye of 'low carb" as the professor of the class had a strong aversion for sugar. I've always been skinny so it was news to me that sugar could do any harm, but the professor explained that it could wreck havoc in the body and cause inflammation. High sugar intage could even be the hot bed of many modern day diseases, he explained. After doing a lot of research myself I started to link my poor health to my poor diet, and I started to clean out all the carbs immediately. 
 
It took a while for me to get a grip of the diet, and it took me many months to eat meat and measure my ketones, but I kept at it and I haven't ever looked back since. The diet changed my life completely, from being tired and weak to being focused, energetic and vibrant. I started to work out, both in the gym and in the running track, and after 3 years of weight lifting I competed in the Swedish nationals for Bench press. 
It's been six years since I started my keto journey and nowadays I measure my ketones daily. When the Ketonix came out  it was a lot easier to keep track of my ketosis, and I seldom or ever have cheat days. As fully keto adapted I need less sleep, I'm rarely sick and I have an abundance of energy. I live in Shanghai were I run my own business, write books, articles, blogs and have a lot of other inspiring projects going. Keto is much more than a diet for me. It's a lifestyle.

Fram tills jag var ca 25 år var jag vegetarian utan några särskilda matlagningskunskaper. Det gjorde att jag levde på nudlar, mikromat, godis, bullar och kaffe. Jag pluggade även på Chalmers och allt pluggande gjorde att jag var uppe sent, ersatte riktig mat med snabbare alternativ och drack alldeles för mycket kaffe. Som man kan vänta sig mådde jag inte toppen på den kosten utan var ständigt trött, orkeslös och omotiverad. Jag orkade inte träna utan sov mycket när jag inte pluggade. Efter en föreläsning i kemisk miljövetenskap fick jag upp ögonen för lågkolhydratkost, med anledning av att professorn för kursen hade starka aversioner mot socker. Jag som alltid varit smal trodde inte att jag behövde bry mig om socker, men han förklarade att det kunde vara inflammationsskapande och ligga till grund för massa oreda i kroppen. Det dröjde inte länge innan jag kopplade ihop min dåliga kost med mitt mående, så på en tvärvändning började jag städa ut alla kolhydrater. 

Det tog lång tid innan jag fick grepp om det riktigt, och det tog ett halvår innan jag började äta kött. Ytterligare några år efter det började ketonmätningarna som ett sätt att hålla mig på rätt kurs, både urinketoner och blodketoner. 

Kosten förändrade mitt liv totalt - jag gick från att vara trött och slö till att bli alert, fokuserad och pigg. Jag började träna, både styrketräning och kondition. Musklerna växte så de knakade och efter 3 år av styrketräning kunde jag ställa upp i SM i bänkpress! 

Nu har det gått 6 år och jag är fortfarande frälst i strikt ketogen kost och mäter mina ketoner dagligen. När Ketonixen kom kunde jag lättare hålla koll på ketonerna, och jag gör sällan eller aldrig avsteg. Som fullt ketoadapterad behöver jag mindre sömn, är sällan sjuk och orkar mer än de flesta. Jag bor i Shanghai, driver ett företag här, skriver böcker och artiklar, bloggar och har massa projekt för mig som jag brinner för. Keto är mer än en diet. Det är en livsstil!

It has never been easier to see and monitor metabolic ketone production So what are the advantages of using KETONIX instead of urine strips and/or blood ketone meters?

KETONIX vs. Urine Strips

  • Urine strips indicate the excess concentration of Acetoacetate in the urine. KETONIX indicates the acetone in your breath. Acetone is produced from the breakdown of acetoacetate in blood. Measurement units are not the same as the concentration of acetoacetate in blood is higher due to less volume (higher density) and is typically measured in mmol/l. The concentration of acetone in breath is lower due to much more volume (lower density) and is measured in PPM. Again, urine strips measures acetoacetate in urine, blood meters measures beta-hydroxybutyrate in blood and KETONIX measures acetone in breath (air).
  • Urine strips can only be used once. KETONIX is reusable and can be used over and over again.
  • Urine strips show a historical value of the excess production. KETONIX shows a real-time value of what is in the blood via exhaled ketones!
  • Urine strips tests need urine and somewhere private to do the test. You can perform tests using KETONIX wherever you can access a powered USB port or the optional KETONIX battery pack.
  • KETONIX may be stored in the bag that was included with the product.
  • Urine strips cost per test. KETONIX is a one-time investment!

KETONIX vs. Blood Ketone Meter

  • Blood ketone meters measures Beta-Hydroxybutyrate in blood, not Acetoacetate or acetone.
  • Blood ketone measure requires test strips which are expensive and often require a prescription.
  • Blood ketone measure sometimes fails and cost you twice, as you need to use another test strip.
  • Blood ketone meter values differ between devices, even when it is the same model and brand.
  • Blood values are measured in mmol/l and exhaled breath in ranges in PPM (Parts per Million). This is of course due to the higher density of blood than exhaled breath. Therefore the blood ketone concentration if Beta-Hydroxybutyrate is not the same as the concentration of acetone in breath. Just as the concentration of acetoacetate in urine is not the same as concentration of Beta-Hydroxybutyrate in blood.

Here is my story on how I went from living on Red Bull and Snickers to having butter in my coffee, bacon for lunch and how I manage epilepsy with a ketogenic diet instead of medicine.The story begins when the IT market hit the bottom. In order to make a living I started Sweden’s first kitesurfing center with certified instructors. My days as a certified kitesurfing instructor began when most other people were asleep and it ended at sunset. There was a lot of running in yard-deep water, dragging students and kites. Luckily the kitesurfing center was sponsored by Red Bull and Snickers…!


At the beginning of season two that started off in the same spirit – with Red Bull and Snickers – my wife and I took a trip to an island off the west coast of Sweden, where I spent a lot of time as a child. After we had our evening coffee, I showed my wife around the island. Suddenly… a coast guard ship? A sting in my head from a needle, which was held by a doctor… I was in a room at the hospital? How did I get here? Why did the doctor keep asking me about my name and birth date? … Then two years of tests and MRIs followed. At one point I was told that I had a brain tumor, which was quite a blow and I spent six months in agony. On the positive side, this was an eye opener, which really made us think about what’s important in life.

After some more tests and a number of MRIs an expert team concluded that I didn’t have a tumor. However, they did not know what caused the incident. “Nothing is growing in there, so don’t you worry!” This was probably my first epilepsy seizure.

In May 2012, a sunny Sunday afternoon, I suffered my next seizure. And just twenty minutes earlier we had been driving on the highway – this could have ended in disaster!

When I woke up, and saw where I was, knew where I was, knew my date of birth and which season it was it hit me… it had happened again!

“You have epilepsy and will need to be on medication for the rest of your life”.

That was it. A new assessment with many more tests.

The standard procedure is to be put on medication. When drugs that reduce the risk of seizures hit the market, the old way of treating seizures with a ketogenic diet more or less disappeared. It’s simply easier to write a prescription than putting the patient on a ketogenic diet. It was the “a-pill-for-everything era”.

The list of possible side effects was a nightmare to read, and yes, nightmares were one of the more common side effects. The drug did not guarantee that I would remain seizure free. The starting dose was 25 mg, and a year later it was up to 250 mg daily. The only parameter my neurologist used to decide whether to increase or reduce the dose was the concentration of medicine in my blood. In late 2012, it was time for a follow-up visit to adjust the dose once again.

The dose was still low, according to the blood test, and my doctor started to build up his case for raising the dose when I stopped him and proposed to drop the medication and go with a ketogenic diet instead, as I by that time I had begun an LCHF/ketogenic diet, that could have a positive impact. Much to my surprise, my doctor accepted the idea and wanted a week to check with colleagues. A week went by and the doctor called me back and said: “Let’s go, but before starting we’ll do a bunch of tests to see if you’re OK to start tapering off and how you’re managing ketosis”.

To find out if I was in ketosis and how deep, I used a lot of urine strips. I also got a blood ketone meter. The urine strips only indicated whether I had excess ketone bodies (acetoacetate) a few hours ago. The blood ketone device displayed another ketone body (beta-hydroxybutyrate). Not the same, and not very correlated, even when I was eating a very low-carb diet (

I had read a lot of studies on epilepsy and somewhere at the back of my head I remembered “breath” and “indicate ketosis”. Being an engineer with no constraints regarding what’s doable or not, I set out to make my own device that I could easily use over and over again. The instrument that evolved worked very well and the idea of making it available to others needing an easy way to measure ketones was born. I called it Ketonix. I use it as a compass to navigate me towards a good ketone production.

Being able to measure my ketone production and seeing how much and how fast my body reacts to diet composition, activity, fasting and eating is very interesting. I sometimes measure using the blood ketone meter, but  99% of the time I use my own ketone-measuring device, Ketonix.

I got in touch with Matthews Friends, which is an organization for families with kids suffering from epilepsy and  treatment with the ketogenic diet. They are currently using my Ketonix in a study. This fall I’ll present it at a conference about kids, epilepsy and the ketogenic diet. I can only imagine how it is being a parent to a child with epilepsy, and helping families would be fantastic.

It has been a few years now without medication and seizures. My diet is a 80/15/5 (fat/protein/carbs) ratio diet, and it works very well for me. My ketones are showing “green” in the mornings and “yellow” in the afternoon, using the Ketonix. When it shows “blue” it’s time to fast, exercise or have more fat! Now it is really easy to adjust the ketone level by just a simple exhale into the device. No disposable strips, no extra cost!

The ketogenic diet hasn’t had any negative effects on blood pressure or markers. My lipid profile is excellent, as even Jimmy Moore, the author of the book “Cholesterol Clarity” has commented.

The most noticeable change from the ketogenic adaptation has been physical. My muscles run on fat, so I can keep exercising without getting muscle fatigue. It’s really inspiring to be able to keep running for hours without getting tired. I fully understand the trend that more and more endurance athletes, like marathon or ultra runners, are going with a ketogenic diet.
