When to measure.


Measure before food and exercise. Note if you are tired, stressed, or having a cold or feel sick.

If you measure after food, or exercise, do a measure every 15 minute for at least a couple of hours.
Both food and exercise will affect your ketosis in different ways depending on the exercise and the 
type and amount of food. Carbohydrate rich food may produce methane by your gut bacterias and
produce a false result. Testing people not using a low carb or ketogenic diet might produce high
methane results, the device is not a "high carb / bad diet detector", it is meant to be used to optimize
low carb/ketogenic diet and lifestyle to use fat as fuel and produce ketones.

Ketogenesis is activated when body needs to, it varies depending on insulin/glucose and glycogen availability. 

How your ketosis is activated by different lifestyle changes are highly dependent on how much glycogen you have stored in liver and muscles, it is also dependent on how "fat-adapted" your cells are.

When your cells are less "fat-adapted", they are better at using glucose than using fat directly. In real life this means the first period of low carb/keto life, your liver needs to replace the lack of glucose with ketone energy. When your cells after some time become "fat-adapted", they can more easily use fat directly and blood sugar is less used, and ketosis decrease. This is when measuring becomes interesting, first you detect your body cells changed, and now the task becomes harder to get into higher ketosis. When "fat adapted", it is mainly the brain and heart that use ketones for energy. Elevated ketosis need you to deplete glycogen by some means like fasting and/or exercise. When your
body fills up your glycogen storage, ketosis increase.

Your glycogen stores are used when your muscles need near maximum strength, weight lifting and HIIT exercise are the most effective ways to deplete glycogen. A hard long spinning exercise could elevate your ketosis for many hours after the exercise ended.

When fasting (no calories), the hormone Glucagon is released and signals to "release energy". The energy released is not only fat, if you have a full liver of glycogen, glucose is also released. The effect of having a full liver and starting to fast will show in a decreased ketosis, until glycogen levels are below your personal threshold and your body need to produce ketones. When fasting, we recommend measuring at least in the morning, lunch time and evening for the first week. For some, it can take days before glycogen level in the liver are low enough to make the body start producing ketones. If one is fat adapted or not plays a big role. Getting enough water and minerals are key to feel good when fasting.
So prepare, for some it might take days to get into the therapeutic range when fasting.
